Making the most of ICT: e-TIPS!

*
Here area series of self training TOP TIPS to help you make the most of ICT and virtual libraries…

1. Google v Fetch!  - When using Fetch! and promoting it to students and staff, can you see how:
- using Fetch! will usually be better than Google for looking up ‘topics’, info. and advice, guidance on issues, etc. - look up the topic in Fetch's familiar, (CRCI) categorised lists.
- Google can be good for searching for specific institution titles, known names/titles (eg companies) and the like.

TRY IT! Fetch It now! Bullying, for example...

2. E-mail links (versus posting for example)!
Why post info.? E-mail a link! Save money and time and send e-info to young people in a format they prefer and so give a better service!

As standard practice when providing or sending info., ask young people: ‘how do you like to read/receive info’? Make this a standard question!
Examples: as with these example links...you can...e-mail a link to:
- interactive Which Way Now!:
- link to SO.com choices zone:
- link to SO.com Job Sector info (eg engineering):
This works for any web page and is a quick, virtually costless way to push good quality information out to students and parents! Read on…
Here’s HOW: (i) Using the left mouse click, click on any ‘url’/web ‘address’ (the ‘www’ etc) to highlight the ‘link’; (ii) now click on the highlighted link with right mouse and then, with left, click on copy; (iii) now open a standard e-mail and, using the right mouse click and paste in the 'online address'/'url', adding explanatory text/brief description, etc and send!
That’s it! Quick, cheap, often in a format the student wants and you can easily send them related links too to open up their thinking.

It's also good when sending details of errors on a web page to us or other web developers!
Copy and paste that link! Saves you and others time and wasted words!

3. Favourites and shortcuts – create your own web!:
Use your favourites button on your own PC. Get in the habit of saving your favourite websites to your 'Favourites' folder (see the top menu bar)! Create folders to make your own e-library.
PLUS right mouse click to create shortcuts to any web page on your desktop (some PCs only) – you can even create a shortcut to a useful WORD doc too sometimes.

4. Print friendly
On SO/VO sites, know where the 'print friendly function is!
Use this print function (not the usual File/print option or printer icons) to print 'titled, topic leaflets' (i.e. just the main text and not the site borders, etc.)

5. Search and GO tips when using SortItOnline.com:
(i) Try different terms and think how else you can word things if you get ‘nothing’.
(ii) See the ‘Show all matches’ link to go to more search results (at the bottom of the table of results) -your search can often be there and not on the front page.
(iii) SortItOnline searching advice: Use the SEARCH and GO before the left hand menu!

7. YOUR TOP TIPS and FEEDBACK, PLEASE!
These are your sites!
So, if you can’t find something, please TELL US!

Good Practice: if it works for you, tell others about 'IT'! For example, do you e-mail links, what works, what websites go down well out there?
FEEDBACK – YOU TELL US!
